OPTION 1: RETURNING TO CUSCO BY TRAIN
For a scenic journey back to Cusco and more time to explore Machu Picchu, taking the train is recommended. Especially if you plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, which can take several hours. Be at the Aguas Calientes train station by 4:22 PM to catch the train, arriving in Cusco around 8:30 PM. Alternatively, take a later train at 6:20 PM, reaching Ollantaytambo in 1 hour and 45 minutes. From there, a 2-hour car ride will bring you to Cusco, arriving around 10:30 PM.
OPTION 2: RETURNING TO CUSCO BY CAR
Returning to Cusco by car is a more budget-friendly option but allows less time for exploring Machu Picchu. If you plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, time may be limited. To choose this option, leave Machu Picchu by midday, walk for 3 hours to Hidroelectrica, and meet the car at 3:00 PM. For those planning these hikes, it’s recommended to stay an extra night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco by car on the 5th day for a fulfilling experience.
